Help and Advice for any Trainee Driving Instructor.
We have a catalogue of FREE Part 3 Training Documents for anyone at the final stages of studying to become a Fully Qualified ADI or anyone thinking about becoming a Driving Instructor. These guides were created during our own training experiences with one of Northern Irelands leading Driving Instructor Trainers.
After you have completed the Part 1 portion (your AccessNI Check and your Driving Instructor Theory and Hazard Perception Test) you will then need to complete the Part 2 and Part 3 portions of the DVA Training before you will be qualified as an ADI.

The PDI/ADI Part 2 Training and Test:
This is an extended driving test (70 minutes on average) of your ability to drive a car at the desired level. This allows the DVA's ADI Testing Team to appraise the quality of your driving which will allow them a degree of reassurance that you have the necessary driving skill and knowledge to move forwards to the final stage of becoming and Approved Driving Instructor.
To pass the Part 2 test you must score 6 minors or less.
We will help with your retraining to get you to the standard of driving that will be expected and once passed you will then be a PDI where you will be in a position to train and teach at the same time.
Training Costs:
Our standard £40 per hour lesson rate applies and the faster you take on the training and put it in to practice during your normal daily driving the lower your expenses will be.
The PDI/ADI Part 3 Training and Test:
This is the test of your ability to Teach/Instruct others. What we have is access to the industries leading Independent Driving Instructor Trainers giving you the very best chance of passing.
During this period, while on your PDI licence, you will have between 6 and 12 months of 'on the job' training while sharpening the skills you will learn with your ADI Trainer allowing you to earn and train as you progress.
You must reach a minimum Grade 4 (out of a possible 6) to qualify as an ADI.
Training Costs:
We will talk with those Independent Driving Instructor Trainers on your behalf. You will not be expected to pay Vrooom Driving Lessons for this part of your training. Paying your Trainer directly will keep your training costs down and the quicker your adapt to the training the less the overall cost of the training becomes.
Becoming a Driving Instructor in Northern Ireland FAQ's:
What are the basic age and licence requirements to become a Driving Instructor in NI?
You must be at least 21 years of age, have held a valid driving licence for a minimum of 4 years out the last 6. During your Part 1 application process you will also need to clear an AccessNI background check.
What tests do I need to pass to become a Driving Instructor in Northern Ireland?
You must pass the ADI Part 1 (an advanced theory and hazard perception test), the Part 2 (a test of your driving ability, with a maximum of 6 minor faults) and a Part 3 (a test of your ability to teach, where you score at least a 4:4 in order to achieve your full ADI licence).
What are the costs for the training I will have to do?
Our costs are pretty simple.
Part 1: You study for the test in your own time with whatever means you find help you best. We will advise and help in whatever way we can when you need us too.
Part 2: We step it up here with focused driver training. We know what a Senior Examiner is looking for in a Part 2 Test and we will help retrain you for it. These are priced as per a regular lesson at either £40 per hour or £60 per 90 minute lesson.
Part 3: We hand this off to some of the best trainers in the business and let them guide you through the process. Those prices are per the charges of the specific trainer.
With both parts 2 and 3, the faster you learn and adapt the less your outlay for lessons will be.
How difficult are the 3 test to becoming an ADI to pass?
Your Part 1 requires intensive study of the Highway Code and your ability to identify developing hazards during the Hazard Perception part of the test. There is no limit in the attempts made to pass the Part 1.
The Part 2 requires you to drive at a high standard of operating a motor vehicle at a level inline with the Driving Test Standards for Northern Ireland. This is an extended test of approximately 70 minutes. There is a maximum of 3 attempts allowed to pass per 2 year qualification cycle.
The Part 3 requires you to show very clearly you are capable of teaching a person how to drive in accordance with the Safe Driving for Life Curriculum. This test comes in 2 parts where you will be tested on specific and paired PST's allowing you to teach and correct errors performed by a Senior Examiner who will be driving during the testing process. There is a maximum of 3 attempts allowed to pass per 2 year qualification cycle.
Why would I want to become a Qualified Driving Instructor?
It is illegal in Northern Ireland to accept payment for teaching someone to drive without becoming qualified to do so. It carries a minimum fine of up to £2500 and will invalidate the drivers insurance in the case of an accident leading to penalty points, a driving ban and potential seizure and crushing of the vehicle being used. You may also face separate charges of criminal fraud.
How much does it cost to become a Driving Instructor?
It often depends on who you train with. We do not charge for our advice around the Part 1 training as it is often more simple than you expect. Part 2 Training we only charge our standard per hour lesson rate and Part 3 Training is passed on to a professional Driving Instructor Trainer who will agree their hourly rate before you start that part of the process.
