Does the DVA publish official driving test routes for Northern Ireland, or are they secret?
No, the DVA do not publish the Driving Test routes for any of the Driving Test Centres in Northern Ireland.
This is due to the fact that, as the environment changes on a daily basis, Examiners will and do have to have the ability to change things to meet those changing circumstances.
That is why we have recorded our own GPS maps during actual tests themselves. This allows us to approximate the test routes used to give you some basic practice materials.
Where can I download driving test route maps or sat nav files for my driving test centre?
Right here. The links above will take you to the test centres we have been to so far. We know we don't have every centre covered but we do update our information as and when we get it.
How many different test routes are typically used at any of the Northern Ireland test centres?
There is a false idea that there is a single route for any test centre in Northern Ireland. This is not the case at all. There could be a vast number of routes to cater for every possible driving scenario.

Do examiners in Northern Ireland use Sat Navs for the independent driving section of the test?
Currently, Examiners do not use SatNav's for the driving test in Northern Ireland. This is something that, based on current information, is going to change with the introduction of the GDL program starting from October 1st 2026.
How long does the independent driving section last during a DVA practical test in NI?
This section of the Practical Driving Test is currently quite short. Examiners do not always have to employ the Independent Drive as it is optional but when they do it is anywhere from 3-5 directions shown on a very basic map of your drive. You are asked to repeat these directions to show you have understand them and you are expected to execute those directions during the next phase of your driving.
If you forget the directions given you are allowed to ask the Examiner during the drive if it is needed.
What happens if I take a wrong turn off the test route during my driving test?
This really shouldn't happen. Why? On a driving test you are allowed to ask the Examiner to repeat their instructions should you forget or think you have not heard them correctly. Examiners are NOT the boogey-man and are there to help when then can and are able. They are there to measure your ability to drive safely and in accordance with the road rules of Northern Ireland. That is all.
Will the examiner expect me to follow road signs or verbal directions for independent driving?
They will prompt you on both during your driving test. You will be expected to understand road signage, road markings, traffic lights, traffic control and more. This can be included on parts of you Independent drive.

Where am I likely to be asked to do manoeuvres on my Driving Test?
Where we are able to, we have added notes and specific spots for manoeuvres on the Test Route maps we have recorded and made available.

Is it useful to practice the Driving Test Routes over and over?
You can but practicing the test routes is more about becoming familiar with the roads used and the difficulties you might encounter like tricky junctions, country roads and the application of speed limits etc. It's not about memorising routes as to memorise them all is both an impossible and pointless task.
