What is the approximate waiting time for a Theory Test in Northern Ireland?
At the moment (August 2026) the waiting time for a Theory Test in Northern Ireland is around 2-4 weeks.
What is the pass mark for the multiple choice and hazard perception sections in Northern Ireland?
The car driving theory test pass mark in Northern Ireland is 43 out of 50 for the multiple-choice questions. This part of the test covers your general knowledge of all aspects of the UK Highway Code and will include questions about subjects you may not encounter in Northern Ireland specifically. However, the test is based on your overall knowledge of the Highway Code.
With the Hazard Perception part of the test your pass mark is 44 out of 75. The core part of this part of the test is your identification of developing hazards while watching 14 videos of scenarios you may encounter when driving.
You must pass both parts in the same session to pass the overall test.

How long is my Northern Ireland theory test pass certificate valid before I must pass my practical driving test?
You have a full 2 years before you will have to repeat your Theory Test once it is passed.
What happens if I pass only one part of the test?
If you fail either section of the test you will have to repeat the test. You MUST pass both parts in order to move forwards. You CANNOT apply for a Practical Driving Test without passing your Theory Test first.
