The New Driving Test Pass Rate data is here!
Driving Test Centre Pass Rates so far for 2026

When this information is published it often raises a few eyebrows and lends itself to people asking a few questions.

  1. Where is the Test Centre with the highest driving test pass rate? That's where I'm doing my test! Well that idea in itself is a mistake. You need to ask yourself, do I know the area? Have I spent enough time driving around that space to know enough about it to cover all the potential roads you might encounter on a Driving Test? Do you even know where the Test Centre is? If the answer to any of these questions is no, you are wasting your time and that of the Examiners and taking Driving Test opportunities away from people who have a real chance of passing.

  2. Why is the Pass Rate so low at my local Test Centre? The answer to this one might come across as more controversial but the reality is genuine. Look at the figures above. Which centres have the highest numbers of people in the area potentially applying for and doing a test? Belfast, right? With combined figures of nearly 250% more than any other town/city on this list it stands to reason there would be more people taking tests. But why are the pass rates so low? This is where the controversial answer comes in and it's an answer that I think is true for every Test Centre across Northern Ireland. TEST CENTRES ARE CURRENTLY BEING EXPOSED TO A LARGE NUMBER OF UNDER-PREPARED PEOPLE TAKING THE DRIVING TEST! A lot of these are International Driving Licence holders. There are exceptions to this generalised rule but those numbers pale into insignificance. Nearly every Instructor will encounter the same thing, a phone call, a voice on the phone telling them I need 1, maybe 2 lessons (if you are lucky), and a test booking date for anything from a few days to a few weeks away. The normal excuse being, I have 'X' number of years driving experience and have passed my test in X country. The REAL truth is, OUR DRIVING TEST STANDARD IS HIGHER THAN MOST and just because you know how to operate a car doesn't mean you can drive to the standard required. In my opinion, under-prepared drivers taking tests are contributing to anywhere from 60-75% of those test failures. That's a huge number. In Belfast alone that would make up a little over 1300 tests and across Northern Ireland that figure increases to over 5100 wasted Test opportunities. A couple of pieces of advice: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do some real training. Get an idea of what you need before applying for a test. All Instructors are happy to help when they are able. Be patient and you will find someone who can help. Stop booking a Driving Test as soon as you can without speaking to an Instructor. You are wasting your own time and money and also wasting a test opportunity for someone who has done the training and is actually ready for the test. Booking a test prematurely makes you part of the problem highlighted in the figures above and that's a huge problem for everyone.
